Cervical 5: Throat & Larynx

The larynx is also known as the "voice box." It accounts for our ability to produce sound and control its pitch and volume. The nerves that control the larynx (via the recurrent laryngeal nerve) pass by the bones of the lower neck. Problems in this area can interfere with the larynx leading to hoarseness or illness in the throat.

The lower neck, especially C5 being the apex of the cervical curvature (lordosis) is highly vulnerable to injury from whiplash-type injury. It's common to see the earliest arthritic changes and disc degeneration at this level.
