Thoracic 8: Spleen

The spleen sits right under your lower left rib and is a major player in your immune system. Like the oil filter on your car, your blood circulates through the spleen which is a web of caverns just filled with white blood cells -- macrophages (literally "big eaters") -- that constant cleanse the blood of any foreign invaders. When you have an infection the spleen literally saves your life. In chronic viral infection like mononucleosis the spleen can become tender and even enlarged from the battle that rages within it.

The nerve supply to the spleen comes from the eighth thoracic vertebra. As you might guess, a subluxation here can be very bad for your health. When we have patients we chronic viral problems we are very careful about keeping this area clear of nerve interference.
